Movement for the People – Modern Dance Technique with Mana Mei
Dance is Medicine. It is a path to personal freedom and empowerment. Through training the body in the art of dance, we are able to move towards accessing the full expression of the human body. By increasing our knowledge of specific dance technique, we allow ourselves greater freedom while also being rooted in grace and aesthetics.
Modern Dance Technique with Mana Mei combines basic modern dance technique, exploratory exercises, and choreography, aimed to increase your strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, fluidity, technical understanding of dance aesthetics, movement memory, and confidence to move gracefully through the world.
This class is for anyone who has a passion for dancing and wishes to heighten their ability to express themselves through movement.
No prior training required, beginners welcome!
Mana Mei began dancing when she was three years old, training in classical ballet until the age of 21. She went on to study modern dance, ballet, improvisation, and choreography at the University of California, Santa Barbara where she received a BFA in Dance. She continued on to dance professionally with the modern dance company Santa Barbara Dance Theater, performing throughout California and touring internationally. In addition, she has worked with the Santa Barbara Opera, been featured in numerous dance films, and has performed plein-aire dance with Robin Bisio/The BirdTribe collective. Once moving to San Francisco, Mana performed with various modern dance companies including Christine Cali/Cali & Co, Risa Jaroslow and Company, and The Anata Project. Her teaching background is in ballet, modern dance, improvisation, and creative movement for children and adults as well as facilitating contact dance workshops and women’s dance circles. Dance is her life-long passion. She believes that our bodies are vessels built to explore all of the complexities of the human experience and by becoming deeply embodied and engaging with others from this place, we may feel our truest connection to the universe.
Mana is the co-founder of RITES OF PASSAGE, an events company based in Bali, Indonesia that is dedicated to producing cutting-edge, thought-provoking, and transformational events, workshops, and retreats centred around movement and human connection.
